Summary

  • Archer Towers are a single-target defense in the Home Village. They are the second defense available to players and the first defense to attack aerial troops, unlocked at Town Hall 2.
  • Archer Towers are extremely versatile structures. They are able to target both ground and air units, and they have excellent range. This versatility means that they should form the cornerstone of every player's defense.
  • Starting from level 10, which is at Town Hall 8, an Archer Tower can be geared up by the Master Builder if he is available and at least one Archer Tower in the Builder Base is upgraded to level 6, which is at Builder Hall 6. This gives the Archer Tower a "Fast Attack" mode, which doubles its damage output at the expense of its range, like the Archer Towers in Builder Base.
  • At Town Hall 16, two level 21 Archer Towers that are not geared up can be merged to form a Multi-Archer Tower.

Strategies

Defensive Strategy

  • Archer Towers can target both ground and air units at an amazing distance. Therefore, it is generally a good idea to place them on the outer perimeter of the village. Doing so allows players to capitalize on the excellent range and provides good coverage for the rest of the defenses.
  • As Archer Towers have the ability to target both ground and air units, a good strategy would be to place all of the other defenses within range of at least one Archer Tower.
    • At lower town halls, it is even good to put archer towers on the inside of the base because of their long range so they can defend the whole base.
  • It is typically a good idea to upgrade Archer Towers before you upgrade Cannons. Although they are more expensive and take longer to upgrade than similar-level Cannons, Archer Towers have more range and can target air units as well as ground units.
  • It is typically wise to put an Archer Tower near a Cannon or Mortar due to the fact that neither of these two defenses can target air units.
  • Place Fast-Attack Archer Towers in particular weak-spots or possible “Queen Walk” areas. It can quickly take down any sponges such as Giants, P.E.K.K.As, Dragons and even Lava Hounds, and also can deal damage to an Archer Queen in a Queen Walk.
    • However, for archer towers in fast attack mode, it is advisable to put them on the inside of the base due to the shorter range.
  • Placing a Wizard Tower or Air Bomb near an Archer Tower can help with its single-target weakness, especially against hordes of Minions and Balloon Parades.

Offensive Strategy

  • Their ability to target both ground and air units makes Archer Towers formidable defenders. However, Archer Towers are only able to damage one unit at a time. This makes it very easy to overwhelm them with large groups of Archers or Barbarians.
  • When deploying only a few Balloons, it is advisable to keep them away from an Archer Tower, as their slow movement speed makes them an easy target. However, Balloons deployed in large numbers will quickly destroy an Archer Tower while only losing one or two Balloons. After the Archer Towers (and Air Defenses) are taken out, the Balloons will proceed to destroy the rest of the village (although Wizard Towers and time can still be a problem). You can also place a group of Archers (around 15-25) and let them do the work.
  • The best choices for attack are high health troops combined with low health, high attack troops, as the high health troops will soak up all the damage, leaving the low health ones to attack.
  • At higher levels, Archer Towers are placed outside Walls with low-health buildings. Strong solo troops like a Super Barbarian or a Valkyrie can destroy it.

Upgrade Differences

  • Archer Towers undergo significant visual changes at levels 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 11, 13, 16, 18, 20, and 21.
    • When initially constructed, the Archer Tower has four pillars with an open wooden lattice tied with ropes supporting a flat wooden platform; an exterior wooden ladder with about five rungs leads from the ground to the platform level.
    • At level 2, the platform gets four short posts over the pillar and the wood gets thicker and more refurbished. The ladder also gets shifted slightly to the left.
    • At level 3, the base of the pillar gets gray stone paddings and wooden beams connects the short posts on the platform. The ladder moves back to the middle.
    • At level 4, the paddings turn into reinforcements and two small green flags are added under the platform. The wood slightly changes color and the ladder is now shifted slightly to the right.
    • At level 5, a solid stone base is added which connects each reinforcement and the ladder is moved to the left.
    • At level 6, the wooden lattice and ladder are removed, and solid vertical wood beam pillars are added. The wooden platform receives stone battlements and the green flags are extended to cover the interior.
    • At level 7, the stone battlements around the platform are reinforced with a thin layer of stone around the protrusions. The solid stone base becomes taller to completely obscure the interior.
    • At level 8, the pillar receives black metal braces at the bottom.
    • At level 9, the flags get shorter to reveal the interior again and the braces on each leg get bigger, touch the ground, and each brace contain eight minute spikes.
    • At level 10, the flags return to normal, golden plates replaced the layer of stone around the battlements, additional golden plates get added to the middle of the wooden pillar and the wooden supports get darker.
    • At level 11, the battlements receive a layer of darker stone, then some dark iron shield-like plates with silver edges on each corner piece, the protrusions on the edge are removed. The wooden pillars are replaced with dark iron, the reinforcements on each pillar merge with the middle plate which is now also dark iron, and the stone base gets another layer at the bottom.
    • At level 12, the tower gains yellow brass guard shield plates on the corner pieces. The base of the tower has brass plating on the sides, the reinforcements have two big spikes instead of eight small ones and the middle plate has square brass ring hanging on each side with two fittings.
    • At level 13, the battlements are overhauled, using solid metal instead of stone, the corner piece has a red-colored shield flush to the top, and the corner protrusion extends up even more with flat pyramid on top. The planks on the platform also switch directions, and are now dark gray in color. The brass plating on the sides get another layer, the reinforcements are now dark iron and the spikes on them grow slightly bigger and turn bright orange.
    • At level 14, the corner pieces use white stone and slanted inwards, the shield is brass again with stone linings, now sporting two orange spikes. The reinforcement is now even darker, the spikes bigger, and the brass ring is thicker hanging on one fitting.
    • At level 15, the edge of the battlements is thicker and flush. The corner piece is now dark iron with smaller spikes, the bottom corner pieces are parallel to the top and no longer have the shield shape, protruding outwards and fused with the reinforcement. The reinforcement of the tower becomes a smooth concrete-like material. The spikes on the reinforcements disappear and the brass ring becomes even bigger.
    • At level 16, the corner pieces are bluish white metal, which slanted down from the middle, extends lower to fully cover the dark iron pillar which also removed the spikes. The reinforcements of the tower are now overhauled to no longer be one big piece and the brass ring is removed. The pillars is visible again and is dark blue, with a gold band above the bolted steel-gray reinforcement, as well as electric coils on the sides replacing the brass plates. The tower now has a stone foundation.
    • At level 17, the battlements gain slanted golden guards on the side and gold is added under the corner pieces. A new golden lining is added over the gold band and across the side of the tower, and the bolts on the reinforcement are now golden pentagonal screws.
    • At level 18, the corner pieces uses icy blue metal covered with black metal plates that has gold on the vertical edge, the side of the battlements has two smaller gold piece that connects the edge of the plate, and the golden guards is removed. The pillar and the platform of the tower is now made of deep turquoise wood. There are now steel-gray fittings with small deep green metal spikes securing the reinforcement also using deep green metal, under the reinforcement, there is a layer of purple metal. The electric coils are removed, some light can be seen from inside the tower shining out of the bar-like window on top of two layers of black stone.
    • At level 19, the icy metal corner pieces grows in size, the black metal plates are moved down, and a layer of gold plates is added between them. The spikes and fittings at the bottoms are bigger.
    • At level 20, the battlements' corner piece, edge, and the pillar reinforcement are now purplish black stone. The turquoise wood platform turns green. The top of the corner piece is lined with four chunks of gold and green diamond-shaped green metal forming a slanted square. The pillar is made of green metal, the purple metal layer is now gold, and the reinforcement replaced the fittings and spikes with golden lining. There are a piece of metal beam connecting the pillar reinforcements and it has a golden pentagonal screw in the middle. There is now greenish water pool at the base of the tower and no more walls.
    • At level 21, the corner pieces are a right-angle triangular prism, with a purple triangle protruding up covering the bluish silver, and purple metal plates on the side. Looking from above, the purple piece at the top would form a square. There is a ring of gold lining on top of the purple metal of the battlements, the square indents the gold lining at its corner. The green wood platform turns back to normal. The edge of the battlements have inverted silver hollow equilateral triangles (symbol of Town Hall 15). The pillars are made of purplish gray stone, the reinforcements are lowered once again, the golden linings are removed, with a taller layer of purple metal and an even taller layer of gold in between. The sides of the tower are just stone walls, but have gold stairs with two steps at the base.
  • The apparent level of the Archer atop the tower also changes with level.
    • When first constructed, the Archer Tower has a single Archer on its platform, with the appearance of a level 1 or 2 Archer. She shoots arrows with light gray heads, tan wooden shafts, and yellow fletching. These arrows leave a short white trail, and a cloud of dust appears when an arrow hits its target.
    • At level 4, the Archer shoots flaming arrows that leave a short orange trail.
    • At level 5, the Archer's appearance changes to that of a level 3 (or 4) Archer.
    • At level 7, the Archer shoots arrows that leave a short purple trail, similar to the color of elixir.
    • At level 8, the Archer's appearance changes to that of a level 5 Archer.
    • At level 10, the arrows begin to explode on impact, leaving behind puffs of thick, dark smoke.
    • At level 11, the Archer's appearance changes to that of a level 6 Archer. She shoots arrows with dark gray heads and red fletching which leave short transparent blue trails.
    • At level 12, the Archer shoots blazing arrows with short yellow trails and a yellow particle effect. The arrows return to light gray heads and yellow fletching.
    • At level 13, the Archer's appearance changes to that of a level 7 Archer. Her arrows' particle effect becomes pink and orange.
    • At level 16, the Archer's appearance changes to that of a level 8 Archer.
    • At level 19, the Archer's appearance changes to that of a level 9 Archer.
    • At level 20, the Archer's appearance changes to that of a level 10 Archer.
    • At level 21, the Archer's appearance changes to that of a level 11 Archer.
  • Gearing up the Archer Tower will remove, relocate or trim most of the footings to a shape perpendicular to the floor, ostensibly to allow the tower to be lowered. On certain levels, it will also center the Archer Tower inside the grass plot on which it stands (un-geared Archer Towers are often a bit behind the center of the plot).

Trivia

  • You don't need to train an Archer to have the Archer Tower, nor do you need to unlock the Archer in your Barracks. Any upgrades to Archers you have completed in your Laboratory have no effect on the Archer Tower whatsoever.
  • The Archer Tower is one of the three defenses in the Home Village that have troops operating it, the other two being the Wizard Tower and the Bomb Tower. It is one of four defenses overall, with the other being the Super Wizard Tower in the Clan Capital.
  • The Archer Tower is one of the buildings that appear in a Scenery, alongside with the Town Hall, Cannon, Mortar, Elixir Collector, Elixir Storage, Crusher, and the Inferno Tower. It appears in the Inferno War Base scenery, as well as the Books of Clash scenery.
  • When upgrading, the tower appears in the war base as the previous level, with no Archer on top, although it is completely functional. (The same also holds true for Wizard Towers.)
  • The Archer Tower, Walls, Cannon, Mortar, Air Defense, and Wizard Tower are the oldest defenses in the game.
  • Even though you cannot upgrade Archers to level 5 until you upgrade your Laboratory to level 6 (which requires a level 8 Town Hall), the Archers atop a level 8 Archer Tower (the max level for Town Hall 7) resemble level 5 Archers.
  • The level 11 Archer Tower in LOST & CROWNED short film contradicts the current design of level 11 Archer Tower.
  • A player can build up to eight Archer Towers, which outnumbers any other defensive building (not counting traps or Walls, and assumes that no merges were completed at Town Hall 16).
  • Interestingly, the Archer atop the Archer Tower deals more damage than normal Archers, though on a per-shot basis this is not true for level 1, and depending on interpretation of Archer level, may not be true for levels 2 and 5.
  • Despite not being available as a card in Clash Royale, the Archer Tower can be seen in the Barbarian Bowl arena as a decoration.
