Summary
- The Golem is a Dark Elixir Troop unlocked once the Dark Barracks is upgraded to level 4. They are slow ground troops with low damage but massive hitpoints.
- When a Golem is defeated, it spawns two, three or four Golemites (depending on the Golem's level) which keep fighting, each carrying 1/5th of the Golem's stats. These Golemites inflict area damage when they are destroyed.
- Golems prioritize defensive structures above all other targets, and will bypass all other types of enemy buildings and troops while any defenses remain on the battlefield. This is true even if they are under attack by enemy Clan Castle troops, heroes or Skeleton Trap skeletons. Note that like all troops that prioritize defenses, Golems do not consider the Clan Castle to be a defense regardless of whether or not it contains enemy troops, but do consider the defending Grand Warden and the activated Town Hall weapon (if any) to be defensive buildings.
Once all defenses are destroyed, Golems become like any other troop with no preferred target; they will attack the nearest building to them regardless of type, and will turn and attack enemy units if they become aware of any nearby and can fight back against them. However, they will not switch targets to enemy units until their previous target was destroyed.
Strategy
Offensive Strategy
- A good strategy is to release Golems and wait until all splash damage defenses like Mortars and Wizard Towers fire on them and then release units like Archers, Barbarians or Wizards.
- Since Golems do little amounts of damage themselves, it is important that they are backed up by high damage-dealing troops and ranged troops, like Wizards or Witches.
- Golems aren't affected by Spring Traps since they take over 18 housing spaces. However, the Golemites are, since they technically take 6.
- If possible, destroy any single target Inferno Towers as quickly as possible. Otherwise, they will wipe out your Golems. However, this is usually preferable to the Inferno Tower targeting a P.E.K.K.A, Barbarian King, or Archer Queen, as they tend to be much more important to the attack. A Freeze Spell can be used to temporarily disable an Inferno Tower and "reset" its damage. If the Inferno Tower is set to multiple target mode, it will be less of a threat to the Golem, but may be a nuisance to the troops protected behind it.
- Golems are fundamental as the tanks of the GoWiPe, GoWiWi, and GoHo attack strategies, amongst others, whether it be for the army or the kill squad.
- An attack strategy is called the Avalanche, where 4 or more Golems are paired with Wizards or Super Wizards.
Defensive Strategy
- Golems are very high-health units, similar to Ice Hounds and Lava Hounds, that can be used to soak up fire. Make sure that the Golem is in the middle or in range of most of your defenses, as it can distract attacking defenses very effectively for a considerable amount of time.
- Golems are typically not found in defensive Clan Castles. They take up too much space and can do very little against enemy troops due to their low damage. However, they make potentially good distractions, especially against low health troops. Their death damage can destroy any smaller melee units attacking it, and its Golemites can do the same on a smaller scale.
- If a Golem has been defeated on a defense, it will not be returned to the Clan Castle even if a Golemite survives.
Upgrade Differences
- The Golem undergoes significant visual changes at all levels except level 2 and 4.
- Initially, the Golem is a large light gray shaded rock creature. It has bright, Elixir-colored eyes with a slight glow.
- At level 3, the Golem's rocky exterior changes to a slightly darker gray.
- At level 5, the Golem gains purple, crystal-like spikes on its back, similar to those on the level 7 Wall. Its entire body also gains a grayish purple color.
- At level 6, some of the Golem's spikes change color to grayish pink. More crystal spikes appear on its shoulders and head.
- At level 7, the Golem's spikes become lavender and much larger and jagged.
- At level 8, the Golem's spikes change color to a sky blue while its body becomes more gray in color.
- At level 9, the Golem's spikes change color to dark purple, and its body also changes to a light grayish purple color.
- At level 10, the Golem's spikes change to a sky-royal blue mix, and its body is now a slightly blueish gray.
- At level 11, the Golem's spikes change to a greenish mix and its body is also now a greenish color to match the level 14 Town Hall's jungle theme. Its eyes also turn yellowish white.
- At level 12, some of the Golem's spikes change to a darker, purple color while others glow white. Its body changes to a more cyan color to match the level 15 Town Hall's magical theme. Its eyes become dark purple.
- At level 13, the Golem's purple spikes turn dark red while its white ones now give off an orange glow. Its body changes to a grayish red color while its eyes become yellow.

Trivia
- You can have a maximum of 10 Golems at one time in a complete set of fully upgraded Army Camps. This number increases to 11 if you include the 1 that can fit into a level 5 or higher Clan Castle. On the battlefield, you can clone an additional 4 Golems with four level 5 or higher Clone Spells (three from the regular spell inventory and one from a level 10 or higher Clan Castle), for a total of 15 Golems.
- The word "Golem" occurs once in the Bible in Psalm 139:16, which uses the word "golmi", that means "my light form", "raw" material, connoting the unfinished human being. A golem is an animated, anthropomorphic being in Jewish folklore, which is entirely created from inanimate matter, usually clay or mud. The most famous golem narrative involves Judah Loew ben Bezalel, the late 16th-century rabbi of Prague.
- The Level 6 Golem resembles its Clash Royale counterpart.
- A Golem event lasted from UTC 8:[14/1/17|00 14/1/17] through UTC 8:[16/1/17|00 16/1/17], which functioned like a mini-achievement with a limited time period. Golems cost only 10% of the normal cost during these two days. Players needed to win three multiplayer battles, each with at least two Golems (Town Hall 10-11) or one Golem (Town Hall 8-9) to claim 300 Experience and 30 Gems. Players also got a chance to gain some Dark Elixir (up to 11,872 if they had level 6 Golems) by queuing just before the end of the event and un-queuing after the event ended.
- The Golem was likely inspired by the Promethean from Age of Mythology, as both units are stone creatures that split in two, smaller versions of themselves once defeated.
- In Clash Royale, a Loading Screen Hint suggests that the Golem's heart is made of stone.
- The Golem is featured as a Barbarian King skin. It is one of five troops that is featured as a Hero skin, the other being the Goblin, P.E.K.K.A, Miner and the Valkyrie.
Comparisons
- The level 11 Golem has the highest hitpoints among all regular troops.
- Golems, Balloons and Lava Hounds are the only troops that deliver splash damage upon dying. This is in contrast to the Wall Breaker, who dies as it delivers splash damage.
- The Golem, along with the Healer, Electro Dragon, Yeti, Dragon Rider, Ice Golem and Headhunter are the only troops that don't have Builder Base or Super Troop counterpart.
- The level 13 Golem is the troop with most hitpoints in the Home Village, if both the Golem himself and his four Golemites are accounted for, as they have a total of 16,560 hitpoints (Golem: 9,200 + Golemites: 4x1,840).
- The Mountain Golem in the Clan Capital has a higher overall hitpoint total (with 44,000 at max level).
