Your Guide for the Newbies

Welcome[]

Hi, welcome to my new strategy guide for newbies. This is a guide that covers almost all aspects of Clash of Clans. This is a strategy guide for new Clashers.

First 48 hours[]

Well, if you haven't completed the tutorial, you should do that first. If you haven't completed the tutorial, you should know you don't have to spend Gems on speeding up the constructions or getting resources to start the next construction; instead, you can wait for the constructions to finish on their own and wait for your base to accumulate enough resources. The choice is yours. Likewise, you don't have to deploy all the Wizards: two will do just fine if you place them next to the Cannon.

Resources

For the first 48 hours, upgrade resource collection (Gold Mines, Elixir Collectors) and resource storage (Elixir Storage, Gold Storage). Be sure you've built all the Gold Mines and Elixir Collectors that you can. When you are able, upgrade your Town Hall.

Note: Upgrade your Elixir Collectors and Gold Mines from the lowest level to the highest level.

Note: DO NOT yet build defenses, walls, traps, etc.

They are not needed yet. You have a 3-day shield but it basically means you can't get attacked until it runs out. How much time you have left is indicated by the shield counter on the top-middle-right side of your screen. You can deactivate your shield early by searching for a multiplayer match under the attack menu; however, I don't recommend doing so.

Note: DO NOT build a second Gold Storage or a second Elixir Storage. Wait about a week in the game to do that.

Defenses

48-72 hours[]

Okay, so you've got about 24 hours left on your shield. Now what?

  • Start building and upgrading defenses!
  • Priority from highest to lowest: Mortar, Archer Tower(s), Cannon(s).
  • This means build and upgrade your Archer Towers to level 2 before you upgrade your Cannons to level 2.
  • You can also defend your base with walls.
Upgrade

Do's and Don'ts[]

Do:

  • Upgrade your Elixir Collectors and Gold Mines to a high level (level 5 for all of them is a good goal by the end of the 48 hours if you're an active player).

Do not:

  • Build a second Gold Storage OR a second Elixir Storage (yet).
  • Bother with building defenses before the last ~24 hours of your shield.
  • Attack other players in multiplayer (it gets rid of your shield prematurely).
  • Spend Gems.
Being-attacked

Attacked[]

If you are attacked, you can lose some resources and a few trophies (more on trophies later, they are unimportant for now). That is it. Period. Any buildings, defenses or walls that are damaged or destroyed pop right back up with no penalty. Traps that are triggered need to be re-armed (they are one-time use per attack).

Losing Enemy Raid

This means there is NO penalty at all if Army Camps, Barracks, Builder's Huts, walls or defenses are destroyed.

If Gold Mines, Elixir Collectors, Gold Storages or Elixir Storages are damaged or destroyed, some resources they contained will be stolen by the enemy. Protect these buildings with all you got.

Trophy

Trophies[]

What are Trophies?[]

Trophies are how the game measures skill. You gain or lose trophies by either winning or losing Multiplayer Battles respectively. Trophies can also be won or lost when your village is raided. If your defense or attack wins, you gain trophies; if your attacker or defender wins, you lose trophies. On the other hand, you cannot gain or lose trophies in a Clan War or in Friendly Battles. So, trophies are only won and lost during regular multiplayer attacks.

Gem

Gems[]

Gems are the premium currency in the game. You can use them to buy extra Builder's Huts, buy a shield (1 day, 2 day, 7 day), buy resources, boost Gold Mines and Elixir Collectors, instantly train troops, boost training rate for troops, or spend them on decorations which is very pointless. Of all of the above, only Builder's Huts add a permanent benefit to your base. All the other boosts or instant-completes run out after a few hours. Typically, players attempt to save Gems in order to earn a 3rd (and eventually, possibly, 4th) Builder's Hut.

Resources-generic

Resources[]

Gold, Elixir and Dark Elixir are the three resources in the game.

Gold

Gold[]

Gold is used for buying, building, and upgrading Elixir Collectors, Elixir Storage, Defensive Buildings, walls, traps, the Town Hall, and the Clan Castle. It is generally considered more valuable by players as you can instantly spend it on your walls in basically unlimited amounts (maxing your walls costs a grand total of 4,816,815,000 or 4.8 BILLION Gold, if you don't use Elixir instead).

Elixir

Elixir[]

Elixir is used for buying, building, and upgrading Gold Mines, Gold Storage, Army Camps, Barracks, Laboratory and Spell Factory. It is also used for training troops and researching upgrades in the Laboratory. You can also brew spells using Elixir once you have the Spell Factory.

Dark Elixir[]

Dark elixir (DE) is a valuable resource available at Town Hall level 7 and higher, and it is used for Dark Elixir troops, spells, and upgrading three of the four Heroes in the game. DE will make a big difference in your attacks and this resource is much rarer than gold or elixir.

Coc shields

Shields[]

Shield Info3

Shields prevent you from being attacked. You get a free shield every time you are damaged to a significant degree (12 hours for being 40% damaged and/or losing your Town Hall, 16 hours for being 90% damaged)

You can also buy 1 day, 2 day, and 7 day shields with Gems at the shop.

Achievements[]

Achievement Completed!

Achievements are tasks that are completed for rewards in the form of Experience and Gems. Your Achievements will appear on your Profile. There are 41 Achievements currently available. The “Keep Your Account Safe!” and “Dragon Slayer” achievements have only one level each with gives all three stars; the others each have three levels, for a total of 119 levels:

Experience Main Banner

Experience[]

Experience is a numeric value based on performing a variety of different activities in game such as completing achievements, upgrading buildings, donating troops, destroying Town Halls whilst raiding, etc. The more experience you earn the higher your level becomes. Experience is usually of little significance since increasing the Experience level only unlocks decorations whenever a certain level is reached. See the decorations page to find out about the Experience requirements of each decoration. At the moment, the maximum level is 500; which was first achieved by the player 五百个小面包 (banned) whose player tag is #PP99VROR.

Player Profile[]

PlayerProfileHV

The Player Profile is a summary of a player's information available to all players. There are various ways to view a Player Profile. One way is to click on a player's name and choose the  option (this can be done wherever the player's name appears, such as from a battle log, or from a Clan's member list). To view your own profile you can click on the blue button that contains the experience level, or if you are in a Clan, you can access the profile from the member list or from your messages in Clan chat.

PlayerProfileBB

Once on the tab "My Profile" there are two sub-tabs, Home Village and Builder Base. However, if the player has not yet unlocked the Builder Base, the Builder Base sub-tab won't appear. Each tab displays information about the Home Village and Builder Base respectively. The gallery on the right side shows both the Home Village and Builder Base tabs of a player profile as viewed by that player. The player profile appears differently when viewing another player's profile.

Attack Multiplayer

Raiding[]

Raiding is an action the player can perform where they deploy troops to attack players' base. There are many reasons why a player might raid you. One goal is to steal resources. Another is to gain trophies to either top up their trophy balance or get promoted to the next league. One final reason is to simply have something to do while waiting for an upgrade.

SinglePlayer

Single Player[]

Single Player Campaigns are battles against NPC or Non-Player Character Goblins and their preset villages (internet access is still needed). There are currently 75 Single Player levels, and each level has 3 stars that can be achieved for a maximum possible 225 stars from all levels. Each level also has varying Gold, Elixir and Dark Elixir rewards that can be raided from the levels' storages and Town Halls.

Obstacles Main Banner

Obstacles[]

Obstacles are structures that obstruct the placement of a village's buildings. Obstacles are trees, logs, rocks, and other foliage that is randomly placed in your village. You start with about 40 obstacles around your village. You can remove them if you have an available Builder and a small amount of Gold or Elixir. Each obstacle that is removed can contain anywhere from 0 to 6 Gems.

Builders[]

Builder info

The Builder

Builders are the workers that live inside the Builder's Hut. They can upgrade and build structures, as well as upgrade your Heroes. Clicking on the Builder icon shows what upgrades they're currently doing, and also shows a selection of suggested builds and upgrades.

Master Builder info

The Master Builder

Clicking on an upgrade shows the location of the structure (or if there are more than one of the same recommended upgrade available, the location of one of said structure; repeatedly clicking on the upgrade cycles between all such structures in this case). If you tap the “+” icon on the Builder interface, you will be taken to the shop, where you can then purchase Builder's Huts. However, this does not appear if you already have all 5 Builder's Huts.

Clans info

Clans[]

Clans are groups of players that join together in order to compete with other Clans in two ways: the first is to pool their trophies and battle to collect the most trophies, and the second is to win Clan Wars for loot and Clan XP. Members of Clans have a private chat for socializing with each other, are able to challenge each other, and are able to donate troops, spells, and siege machines to each other. Within a Clan, there are four ranks, member, elder, co-leader, and leader. Including the leader, you can have up to 50 members in a Clan.

Town Hall1

Town Hall[]

The Town Hall is the main and important building in the game. The Town Hall lets you unlock new buildings the more you upgrade it. This is the heart of your village. Upgrading the Town Hall unlocks new defenses, buildings, traps and much more. Protection of the Town Hall is critical for achieving player's objectives. The Town Hall is equivalent to the Builder Hall in the Builder Base, or the Goblin Hall in the Single Player Campaigns. Players should aim to protect their Town Hall at all costs, as it contains 20% of all 3 different resources.

TroopStrategyGuides

Army[]

A player's army is used against either the goblins on the campaign map, or against other players in order to win trophies and loot Gold and Elixir⁣—this is called raiding. Troops are created in Barracks and are stored in Army Camps. In the Home Village, some troops require Elixir and are trained in the normal Barracks; others require Dark Elixir and are trained in the Dark Barracks. In the Builder Base, troops are trained in the Builder Barracks.

Gem Box

Gem Box[]

The Gem Box is a resource which can be used to earn 25 free Gems. The Gem box has a high chance to spawn in 2 weeks time. Gem boxes are rare, so make sure to keep an eye out for them! When you see a Gem Box, remember to collect it, because if you don't, it's 25 Gems down the drain. Clearing the Gem Box costs 1,000 Elixir, takes 30 seconds to clear and will give you 25 gems.

BB-LootCart1

Loot Cart[]

The Loot Cart is a cart containing 20% of a player's lost loot after any defense. This loot is generated by the game. The attacker will still get all the loot that they stole from the defender's village. Only one Loot Cart will appear at a time, so it is sometimes best to collect it immediately. If you don't log in the game for at least three consecutive days, the Loot Cart will appear overloaded, contain much more resources and no longer depend on the number of resources looted, but depend on the number of days not logging in and the Town Hall level. The number of resources will stop increasing at 90 days of not logging in.

Decorations-Main-Banner

Decorations[]

Decorations are purely aesthetic objects. They have no active purpose in the defense or production of your village. There are also War League Decorations, which are only purchasable from the League section of the Shop, and cost League Medals to place.

Barracks1

Barracks[]

Barracks allow you to train troops. These troops after being trained will be stationed in Army Camps. The troops' rate of training depend on the number of Barracks that can train said troops; the troop's training time is inversely proportional to the number of Barracks you have, and can be determined by dividing a troop's base training time (training time with one Barracks) by the number of available Barracks capable of training that troop, rounding down any fractions of seconds.

Dark Barracks1

Dark Barracks[]

Dark Barracks allow you to train Dark Elixir Troops will be stationed in Army Camps. It is unlocked at Town Hall level 7. The training speed of a troop is dependent on the number of Dark Barracks that are capable of training it. The value can be obtained via dividing the troop's base training time by the amount of available Dark Barracks, rounding down any fractions of seconds if necessary.

Abandoned Base

An abandoned base

Abandoned bases[]

Abandoned Bases, often called dead bases, are a rare "treat" in the Clash of Clans realm. They have the opportunity to serve as an oasis of easy Gold and Elixir with other bases seemingly devoid of loot. A base is considered abandoned after an extended period of inactivity.

Dead acount

A dead base

Rarity and causes[]

Abandoned bases occur at all Town Hall levels, but generally tend to be more frequent at particular trophy ranges, and when overall playerbase activity is lower (playerbase activity tends to be higher during certain events such as Clan War Leagues and Clan Games). Abandoned bases at lower levels may stem from new players leaving after trying out the game briefly, while at higher levels it may arise from high costs or a feel of lack of progression, causing the owners of abandoned bases to be frustrated and go on hiatus for a while, allowing attackers to collect their loot.

Laboratory1

Laboratory[]

The Laboratory is a building where you can upgrade your troops, spells and Siege Machines. The Laboratory is unlocked at Town Hall level 3. What dark secrets do these Wizards hide inside their Laboratory? Nobody has dared to look. All we know is that their research makes our spells and troops harder, better, faster and stronger. Heroes and Pets cannot be upgraded in the Laboratory, instead requiring a free Builder or the Pet House to upgrade respectively. It is possible to upgrade the Laboratory itself while an upgrade is happening within the Laboratory, and research will continue as normal while the Laboratory is being upgraded.

Magic Items[]

Magic Items info

These special items are stored inside your Town Hall and Builder Hall. Within their interfaces, you will have the ability to see the full list of all the Magic Items, the ones you have acquired being first. You can also read descriptions. Magic Items provide benefits to your buildings, your troops, your heroes, spells, and anything else in-game. Some Magic Items will provide boosts to production, while others will instantly complete an upgrade in progress, as well as other miscellaneous benefits. If you have a Magic Item you don’t need, then you have the option to cash in that Magic Item for Gems.

Treasury[]

Treasury info

The Treasury safeguards bonus loot from Clan Wars, Clan Games, and Star Bonuses. Treasury capacity is determined by Town Hall level and by the Clan Perks of any clan the player is in. The level of the Clan Castle has no effect on the treasury capacity. Only 3% of loot stored in the Treasury will be stolen if an attacker completely destroys your Clan Castle, and if it's not destroyed in an attack the attacker will not steal any loot from it at all.

Wall1

Walls[]

Walls are great for keeping your village safe and your enemies in the line of fire. Wall placement is a key point in designing a well-defended village. Walls are the main fortification for defense and are capable of withstanding a great deal of damage from attacking enemies. However, the effectiveness of Walls is greatly lowered if they are not constructed to completely enclose the structures they are designed to protect. Any gaps in the continuation of the Wall structure will render it useless, as enemy troops will simply walk through the broken area.

E12 Header TrapsHV

Traps[]

Traps are relatively inexpensive structures that remain hidden until they are activated by an attacking troop moving into their trigger radius. They cause harmful effects to attacking troops, such as direct damage or will otherwise slow them down.

Spell Factory[]

Spell Factory1

The Spell Factory is an army building that allows the player to create spells using Elixir. There are currently 7 permanently in-game Elixir Spells: the Lightning Spell, Healing Spell, Rage Spell, Jump Spell, Freeze Spell, Clone Spell and Invisibility Spell. There was one limited edition holiday-themed spell called the Santa's Surprise that was released around Christmas 2012, and one limited edition birthday-themed spell called the Birthday Boom. The Spell Factory is unlocked at Town Hall 5. The Spell Factory takes up a 3x3 space. The spells themselves can be used in battle by selecting a previously created spell and clicking on the enemy's village. The spell can then be placed anywhere, bypassing Walls or buildings, and it cannot be destroyed by any defenses.

Dark Spell Factory1

Dark Spell Factory[]

The Dark Spell Factory is a building that allows the player to create Dark Spells using Dark Elixir. It is unlocked at Town Hall level 8. All existing Dark Spells take up one housing space in the spell storage, whereas most Elixir spells with the exception of the Freeze Spell, Lightning Spell and Invisibility Spell (as of summer 2020 update) take at least two spaces. The total spell storage capacity is shared between the Spell Factory and the Dark Spell Factory. The Dark Spell Factory adds one spell storage capacity to the total spell storage capacity upon construction, but adds no more when it's upgraded.

Workshop4

Workshop[]

The Workshop is a building that constructs Siege Machines, which are special weapons that carry your Clan Castle troops. Siege Machines cost Gold to build, but are upgraded using Elixir. The Workshop is unlocked only at Town Hall 12. The Workshop is unable to function when being upgraded; since a player can only have one Workshop at a time, this disables the Siege Machine production while the Workshop is being upgraded (though any Siege Machines being built when the upgrade is started will continue being built at the normal rate, and will be available as soon as they are completed).

E12ArmyHeader Heroes

Heroes[]

Hero units are the most powerful troops in the game. They are immortal, meaning you only have to train them once. However, if they have been defeated, they may have to regenerate in order to fight again. There are 4 Heroes in the Home village while the Battle Machine is found in the Builder Base. The 4 Heroes have skins which can be purchased by Gems in the Wardrobe.

E12ArmyHeader Siege Machines

Siege Machines[]

Siege Machines are special weapons created in the Workshop that carry your Clan Castle troops. Each type of Siege Machine offers a unique method of transporting and deploying your reinforcements during your attacks. It is destroyed when it either successfully completes its objectives, or when it is damaged excessively by defenses, or when it is ordered to do so by the player. Upon being destroyed, the Siege Machine releases the Clan Castle troops housed within it.

E12ArmyHeader Pets

Pets[]

Pets are units that can be assigned to different Heroes to support them in battle. Each Pet can only be assigned to one Hero at a time, and is only deployed alongside the respective Hero. Pets are immortal, only summoned once, and do not require regeneration after being defeated. They are always available if they are not being upgraded. Each Pet has its own special ability to help your Hero. Check out my Pet Guide which tells you which Hero you should assign it to.

E12ArmyHeader Non-Combatants

Non Combatants[]

Non-Combatants are the people in your village/base that are citizens and workers. As suggested by their name, they do not fight. They are the Builder, Villager, Strongman, Trader, Master Builder and O.T.T.O.

E12ArmyHeader Spells

Elixir Spells[]

Spells are created in the Spell Factory. Upgrade your Spell Factory to get more spells and to be able to hold more spells. You can also research spells in the Laboratory to make them more powerful. Santa's Surprise and Birthday Boom are temporary Elixir Spells.

E12ArmyHeader Dark Spells

Dark Elixir Spells[]

Dark Spells are created in the Dark Spell Factory, and all take up only one housing space. Upgrade your Dark Spell Factory to unlock more dark spells. You can also research dark spells in the Laboratory to make them more powerful.

Clan Games Example

Clan Games[]

Clan Games unlock at Town Hall 6. This is a weeklong event that occurs in the last week of each month, minus a few days, and it is definitely worth rushing to Town Hall 6 to make sure you can participate. During clan games, all clan members work on a shared pool of missions, each of which gives some number of points. For example, “earn 3 stars in multiplayer for 100 points” or “earn 3-stars using Giants for 175 points,” etc. Each player can only get 4,000 points, but to unlock all the rewards, the clan needs to go get to 50,000 points combined! Be sure to help out! At the end of the games, everyone who completed at least one game will be able to select what prizes they want.

Clan Wars matchmaking

Clan Wars[]

Clan Wars are a special kind of battle that takes at least 5 players on a team to play. Each player receives two attacks, and each team tries to 3-star as many of the enemy team’s bases as they can. During the attack, the enemy base will be stocked with very small amounts of loot, so you will not receive much from destroying it. However, if you receive at least one star against an opponent, you will receive bonus loot to your clan castle at the end of the war. Make sure you have space for it!

Update Clan Perks

Clan Perks[]

Clan XP and Clan Perks were introduced in the February 2015 update. Participating in Clan Wars will give your clan a certain amount of experience, which you can use to give the people in your clan new perks. For example: Giving extra storage to the Treasury. Achieving reward tiers in Clan Games will also award an amount of Clan XP. Once enough Clan XP is earned, the Clan will level up, and receive Clan Perks that permanently boost various aspects of the Clan. The level of the Clan is visible on the Clan Badge, while the perks that the Clan has unlocked can be viewed by tapping the "Clan Perks" button. Unlocked Clan Perks only apply to members belonging to clans that have unlocked them. They do not apply to players who do not have a Clan or that are in a Clan that hasn't unlocked them.

Banner Attack Challenges

Attack Challenges[]

Attack Challenges are temporary levels available through the Events tab. Like in Practice Mode, players use a preset army for each level. Players can earn resources in attacking, but must score 3 stars to earn the Experience/Gem/Magic Items rewards. There are unlimited attempts, so players can try as many times as they need to successfully 3-star the level.

Attack Singleplayer

There are two types of these challenges:

Real player bases: they are taken from player bases, and the amounts of buildings, traps and heroes have the same limits as a player can have. Time limit is the regular 3 minutes.

NPC bases: like the Single Player Campaign, they can have more than what a player can have. Some levels even have their exclusive Clan Castle defenses. Time limit can be longer than 3 minutes.

Super Troop Symbol

Super Troops[]

Super Troops are troops that are more powerful troops than their original counterparts and have special abilities. You can temporarily boost the original into their Super Troop counterpart with Dark Elixir or a Super Potion once you have reached Town Hall 11 and have the base troop's level requirement reached. However, you can receive them earlier from Clan donations. Super Troops take up more housing space than their normal counterparts. Their training time and cost are mostly increased proportionally. Additionally, it is only possible to have up to two active types of super troops at any given moment.
