I have bought £12.97 worry of gem, which I used to buy the 3rd and 4th builders and the. King.
see its called gem buyer some of us arnt spoiled (or have a job)
I'm level 89, TH8, never spent a penny on gems. I stay in Crystal III almost exclusively these days. I have a level 9 Barbarian King (one below the max for my level), about 11 more defensive upgrades left, and a mix of level 7 and level 8 walls. I've also got level 4 Minions and level 2 Hog Riders (I'll be starting the level 3 upgrade soon).
The only gems I have I've earned from achievements and removing obstacles, and the only thing I've spent them on is builder's huts (I have 4, almost have enough for the 5th). That is, other than accidentally completing training one time many months ago in one of my barracks.
Is it hard to do what I've done? Not at all. Does it take patience? Yes. And is patience hard for some people? Yes it is, but that doesn't mean Supercell needs to go changing its game. In fact, it's simply good game design on their part. Patient people can play the game for free. Impatient people can help fund development of the game.

Hey guess what not that meany people play as long as some of us... Witch forces them (if they want to cach up on heros without wating 9-12 months form beginning) To buy gems
Or, just enjoy the low-level game. I'd actually argue it can be more fun than high-level play, as your upgrades take less time and your troops train faster.
