Summary

  • The Wall Breaker is the fifth troop unlocked in the Barracks. As the name suggests, Wall Breakers favor going after Walls, dealing massive damage to them.
  • The Wall Breaker attacks by locating the nearest protected (read: Wall enclosed) building and destroying its protective Walls, blowing itself up in the process. It deals splash damage around its target and deals 40x damage to Walls.
  • Wall Breakers prioritize Walls above all other targets, and will completely ignore any building or enemy troop while even a single segment of Wall exists on the battlefield.
If all Wall segments are destroyed, Wall Breakers become like any other troop with no preferred target; they will attack the nearest building to them regardless of type, and will turn and attack enemy units if they become aware of any nearby and can fight back against them.

Strategies

Offensive Strategy

  • The first thing to understand about them is that, despite their name, Wall Breakers don't go after Walls, but instead go for the nearest building enclosed by Walls. They will lock onto a building and then target any wall on route to that building.
  • Wall Breakers destroy walls faster than any other unit and make gaps for other units such as Giants to enter the opponent's base. Wall Breakers will look for the nearest building that is trapped (fully or partially) by Walls and target any Wall that is trapping them. Once Wall Breakers have destroyed a protecting Wall, the remaining Wall Breakers will proceed to destroy the protecting inner walls.
  • Due to their low health, they should be used strategically and in smaller quantities. Protect it with other troops so it can reach its target.
  • Wall Breakers can be extremely effective if you deploy 2 at a time very quickly. However, doing so can render both easily vulnerable to splash damage which can easily destroy them both. Wall Breakers have small amounts of health so use them wisely. Most defenses will be able to destroy it in one shot. Because of this, Giants and Wall Breakers make an excellent team: The Giants distract and in return the Wall Breakers destroy the Wall. Then the Giants can move in successfully. Mortars can be capable of taking out Wall Breakers in one shot. It is helpful to place the Giants a short distance away from the target Walls so that splash damage from a Mortar or Wizard Tower won't catch the Wall Breakers as well. Often times when breaking a Wall, it can be beneficial to deploy one Wall Breaker first, then follow up shortly afterwards with the remainder required to break the Wall. This prevents losing all the necessary Wall Breakers to traps, or having them break different Walls.
  • Supporting the Wall Breaker with a Rage Spell is a good idea due to the massive bonus to damage, provided if it is also properly protected and makes it to the target.
    • The Wall Breakers' death damage is unaffected by the Rage Spell, however, so if they are killed while raged before they can hit the Wall, it will not do any more damage than if they were not raged. Thus, it is only recommended to add Rage Spells to Wall Breakers if the Rage Spell will serve a double purpose (such as enraging other troops or a Queen Walk as well).
  • Wall Breakers are not fooled by spiked or decoy Walls. Their AI will simply have them bypass these Walls if they are not the only Walls left on the base.
    • Note that Wall Breakers will not target single Walls. There needs to be at least 3 connected Walls for a Wall Breaker to target it, and it must be protecting a building fully or partially. Wall Breakers do splash damage, so it can also be used to finish off buildings close to the Walls if they have enough hitpoints left for the Wall Breaker to successfully destroy them. Having double layers of Walls is ineffective vs. Wall Breakers for said reasoning, but you can have a space between them.
  • Wall Breakers are somewhat difficult to use in Clan Castles offensively, since they will run to the nearest Wall in a single file, which is likely contrary to typical deployment methods (usually multiple at once). Additionally, due to their fragility, the Wall Breakers will be vulnerable to defenses without assistance from any ground troop to tank.
    • Wall Breakers can be useful in the Clan Castle for low level players, though. If the low level player doesn't have Wall Breakers unlocked or the Wall Breakers are low level, a high level Wall Breaker or two in the Clan Castle can really help them. Compared to other options, however, Wall Breakers are poor reinforcements.
  • At higher levels where Wizard Towers (and possibly Bomb Towers) can one-shot Wall Breakers, it is beneficial to place your Wall Breakers at a slight offset from your meat-shields. Doing otherwise will most likely result in your Wall Breakers being destroyed by the splash tower while it attacks the tank.
    • Be careful of the multi-targeting Inferno Tower if it is close enough to the Wall you're attempting to break. A Wall Breaker that is offset from a meat-shield can still be killed by the Inferno Tower if the latter does enough damage.
    • As Wall Breakers do a small amount of death damage if destroyed in the vicinity of a Wall, using them in large enough numbers will be able to break a wall: six all Breakers will be able to destroy a relative-level Wall even if they are all killed near the Wall.
  • As of the October 2020 update, the Wall Breaker is now subject to the Jump Spell. It will ignore walls that were rendered accessible by it and destroy other walls instead.
  • Wall Breakers can be quite effective at luring opposing Clan Castle troops. Placing them carefully close to the Clan Castle can serve as a double purpose of both destroying nearby Walls and luring out the Clan Castle troops. However, bear in mind that they kill themselves after attacking, which may not be enough time to lure out all Clan Castle troops.

Defensive Strategy

  • A single Bomb of equal or greater level can destroy Wall Breakers. Spring Traps can eject multiple Wall Breakers at once; if you intend to use these traps to eliminate Wall Breakers, you can place these against a Wall that they likely target.
  • Wall Breakers are not recommended to have in Clan Castles as a defensive troop, since they have to blow themselves up to destroy the opponent's troops, they also do very little damage. However, they are good at clearing troops with low health, but that is not a good reason to include them.
  • Always try to keep less important buildings outside of your Walls (Elixir Collectors, Builder's Huts, etc.), so the enemy's Wall Breakers have to be placed farther away. This increases the chances of the Wall Breaker getting killed by your defenses before it blows up your Walls. The buildings will also obstruct the Wall Breaker's path, taking longer to reach the Walls.
  • Defend important defenses near an outside compartment by removing the outer corner Walls of that compartment. This way the Wall Breakers will go to nearby compartments, as the one without corner Walls will not be considered enclosed and will not be targeted.

Upgrade Differences

  • The Wall Breaker undergoes significant visual changes at all levels except level 2, 4, 8, and 9.
    • Initially, the Wall Breaker's appearance is that of a small Skeleton that wears a brownish-orange aviator hat and has a small scar across its right eye socket, carrying a bomb.
    • At level 3, the bomb that the Wall Breaker is holding becomes larger.
    • At level 5, the Wall Breaker's bomb turns golden.
    • At level 6, the Wall Breaker's bomb change to a barrel of explosives, similar to a part of the Giant Bomb.
    • At level 7, the top of the barrel is opened, revealing gunpowder. A large stick of dynamite is fitted into the opened barrel.
    • At level 10, the hoops from the barrel turn gold.
    • At level 11, the hoops from the barrel turn purple and the sides of the barrel are decorated with an upside-down golden triangle. A second stick of dynamite is fitted into the barrel.

Trivia

  • If there are no Walls and you deploy a Wall Breaker, it will run to the nearest building and blow itself up. However, it will do much less damage to the building compared to what it can do against Walls, e.g. a level 5 Wall Breaker will do up to 66 damage to a building, whereas it will do up to 2,640 damage to Walls.
  • You can have a maximum of 160 Wall Breakers at one time in a complete set of fully upgraded Army Camps. This number increases to 185 if you include the 25 that can fit into a fully upgraded Clan Castle. On the battlefield, you can clone an additional 84 Wall Breakers with four fully upgraded Clone Spells (three from the regular spell inventory and one from a level 10 or higher Clan Castle), for a total of 269 Wall Breakers.
    • However, Wall Breakers are ineffective alone, so this is inadvisable.
  • Balloons are "promoted" Wall Breakers.
  • It is suggested that Bombers are also promoted Wall Breakers, as one of the Loading Screen Hints in Clash Royale says "One day, Wall Breakers realized that they could do a lot more damage if they THREW the bomb rather than sat beside it. Imagine that...", implying that Bombers used to be Wall Breakers.
  • Wall Breakers resemble dead Builders since both of them have similar leather hats.
  • In the Chinese language setting of the game, the Wall Breaker is called "Bomberman", as it is literally a humanoid skeleton carrying a bomb.
  • During late October of 2016, the Wall Breaker's training cost was temporarily reduced by 50% and its training time changed to 40 seconds to celebrate Halloween.
  • The Wall Breaker is likely inspired by the Petard from the Age of Empires series. They both have explosive suicide attacks that devastate walls, but aren't effective against anything else.
  • If a Wall Breaker is launched off the map by a Spring Trap or otherwise, its bomb will explode (doing death damage as normal) but the Wall Breaker will appear to still carry the bomb as it flies off the map.
  • In Clash Royale, the Wall Breakers have a similar bomb to that of a level 6 Wall Breaker in Clash of Clans. However, it does not wear an aviator cap.
    • The first sentence of the Wall Breaker's description is also shared with its Clash Royale counterpart, with the word "walls" replaced by "buildings", as Walls do not exist in Clash Royale.
    • Unlike the Clash Royale counterpart, the Wall Breaker's damage in Clash of Clans is extremely low and not enough to destroy anything other than Walls. Due to Walls not existing in Clash Royale, they were made to target any building instead, with higher base damage but no damage multiplier. Wall Breakers in Clash of Clans also have death damage, which is not the case in Clash Royale.
  • Surprisingly, Wall Breakers have a larger splash radius than their Super counterpart, Super Wall Breaker.
  • The Wall Breaker is a Skeleton, despite the Wall Breaker being made of Elixir and Skeletons being made with Dark Elixir.

Comparisons

  • The Wall Breaker is 1 of 14 troops in the Home Village that originated from Clash of Clans and appear in Clash Royale, the others being Barbarian, Archer, Giant, Goblin, Balloon, Wizard, P.E.K.K.A, Minion, Hog Rider, Valkyrie, Golem, Witch, Lava Hound, and Bowler.
  • The Wall Breaker is 1 of 2 troops of which the picture in the Barracks resembles an upgraded version, the other being the Dragon.
  • Wall Breakers are the first unlocked Elixir Troop to do splash damage and currently the only permanent troops to target Walls.
  • The Wall Breaker, along with the Barbarian, Archer, Giant, Goblin, Balloon, Wizard, Healer, Dragon and P.E.K.K.A are the oldest units in the game.
  • The Wall Breaker, Barbarian, Archer and P.E.K.K.A are the first units to appear in a loading screen.
  • Along with Minion, Wall Breakers are the only troops that only occupy 2 housing space.
  • Wall Breakers have the highest damage multiplier of any troop caused by attacking the prioritized target. They also do the most damage per housing space if they attack Walls.
